The University of Oregon is the winner of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Pacific Northwest USTA Tennis Ace Award. Mark Toppe from the USTA Pacific Northwest nominated University Oregon for their work with the Tennis On Campus program.
Greg Smith, Tennis Professional with the Department of Physical Education and Recreation, implemented a singles tennis league program, which was recognized by this USTA award. The league was created with a duel purpose of providing university students and staff with an organized means to find competitive matches and/or tennis partners.
Many students have been used to playing tennis regularly throughout their youth, but had difficulty in continuing their tennis after coming to college. The league helps address this issue. There are leagues for both men and women. An internet online tennis scoring service is used, and grant money was donated by both the USTA and the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).
