PEF 111 STRETCH AND FLEX
Credits: 1
Format: Two 50-minute sessions per week
Level: Beginning to advanced
Prerequisite: None

Content: The major emphasis in this course is on increasing one's level of flexibility. There is also some time devoted to muscular endurance training and relaxation technique. 

PEF 201/202 PILATES MATWORK 1/2
Credits: 1
Format: Two 50-minute sessions per week
Level: Beginning to intermediate
Prerequisite: None for 201. 201 required for 202

Content: This course incorporates the five basic principles of Pilates exercise into a progressive experience designed to lengthen and strengthen the entire body.  Students perform essential through intermediate matwork exercises while learning the physiological and biochemical basis of the Stott Pilates method.

PEF 241 GROUP CYCLING 1
Credits: 1
Format: Two 50-minute sessions per week
Level: Beginning/ intermediate
Prerequisite: None

Content: This course is designed for beginning to intermediate fitness participants. Workout sessions are performed on a specialized stationary cycle (Startrac V-bike). Students exercise to music using a variety of cycling positions and drills. Upon successful completion of the course, students will: (a) understand the operation and adjustment of specialized indoor cycles (V-bikes); (b) enhance their cycling mechanics; and (c) improve their cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular endurance.

PEF 242 GROUP CYCLING 2

Format: Two 50-minute sessions per week
Level: Intermediate/advanced
Prerequisite: PEF 241 or equivalent

Content: Group Cycling 2 provides an exciting, high-intensity workout for intermediate to advanced fitness participants. Workout sessions are performed on a specialized stationary cycle (Startrac V-bike). Students exercise to music using challenging cycling positions and drills. Upon successful completion of the course, students will: (a) understand advanced principles of cycling; (b) enhance their cycling mechanics; and (c) improve their cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular endurance.

PEF 291 SPEED, AGILITY AND CONDITIONING
Credits: 1

Speed, agility, and conditioning are vital components of athletic success. This course is designed to help student develop movement skills that enhance performance in their specific sport or activity.  Students will learn science-based training principles, and then apply those principles through the performance of speed and agility drills and other conditioning activities.

PEF 301 CORE AND STRETCH
Credits: 1
Format: Two 50-minute sessions per week
Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Prerequisite: PEF 111 or equivalent

Content: A strong/stable core can enhance performance and reduce the likelihood of injury.  Flexibility is also a critical and often neglected component of health-based physical fitness.  Students in this course will learn the theory and practice of these two vital fitness disciplines.  They will develop both core strength and flexibility thorough a well-designed program of traditional sport-based and pilates-based exercises. Each session includes a warm-up, 20-plus minutes of abdominal and spine strengthening exercises, and 20 minutes of stretching.

PEF 310 NUTRITION AND PERFORMANCE

Format: Two 50-minute lecture sessions per week
Level: Beginning
Prerequisite: PEAE 221 or equivalent experience

Content: This course explores the influence of nutrition on athletic performance and health.  Students develop skills in body composition assessment and nutritional analysis.  they implement a plan for enhancing personal dietary/training behaviors and investigate the risks and benefits of nutritional supplements.

PEF 325 HEALTHY WEIGHT LOSS: NUTRITION AND EXERCISE
Credits: 3
Format: Lecture and activity
Level: Beginning through intermediate
Prerequisite: BMI 25kg/M2 or above; free of eating disorders

Content: This course is designed for students in need of weight management guidance who are motivated to use a lifestyle approach (nutrition, exercise, stress management) to lose a moderate amount of weight. The class meets four days per week.
On Monday and Wednesday, students participate in lectures and group process work to evoke positive lifestyle change and increase knowledge of nutrition and exercise. On Tuesday and Thursday, they participate in group fitness workouts to increase cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, and calorie burning. Instructor permission and pre-screening are required.

PEF 340 PERSONAL TRAINER

Prerequisite: PEL 409: Practicum (Fitness Assistant)Note: Instructor permission required

Content: This course is designed to prepare student employees of the Student Recreation Center to sit for the ACE Personal Trainer Certification Exam. This course will provide information and learning activities related to the principles of Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Kinesiology, Exercise Testing, Exercise Prescription, and Nutrition as they apply to the career of Personal Training. Registration for this course requires instructor approval.

PEF 399 SPECIAL STUDIES GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR TRAINING

Format: Lecture and activity
Level: Intermediate
Prerequisite: At least two terms enrolled in UO group exercises classes (PEAE or PEF)
NOTE: Instructor permission required

Content: This course is designed to prepare students to instruct group fitness workouts in the campus recreation setting. Students will participate in activity sessions to improve group fitness leadership skills, and lectures to reinforce principles of exercise physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, and nutrition. Registration for this course requires instructor approval.
