The Physical Education (PE) Program offers physical-activity courses for university students and faculty and staff members as well as members of the Eugene-Springfield community. Physical education courses emphasize the development of physical skills, improvement in physical-fitness levels, and the acquisition of knowledge that contributes to a healthy lifestyle.

More than 180 courses are offered each term in a variety of activity areas - aerobics, aquatics, certification, fitness, individual activities, leadership, martial arts, mind-body, outdoor pursuits, racquet sports, running, scuba, team sports, and weight training. This ever-changing array of courses is taught by an international staff of faculty members, coaches, graduate teaching fellows, and contract employees who share their expertise and experiences.

More than 4,000 participants enroll in PE courses each term. Most classes meet twice a week for 1 credit. Several outdoor-pursuit courses include three-day field trips in addition to on-campus sessions. Up to 12 credits in physical education may be applied to the bachelor's degree.

Opportunities are available for people who have disabilities or who need special accommodations in order to participate in physical education courses. More information is available from the PE office.

WHAT COURSES ARE TAUGHT EACH TERM? WHERE ARE THEY LISTED?

Go to the online CLASS SCHEDULE for a listing of all UO classes offered in a given term. Select the term and click on the link for "one and two credit courses". Click on [P-R] and you'll find a list of approximately 180 course offerings. Click on the CRN to obtain specific information (e.g. instructor, fees, dates and times) about a particular course.

HOW DO I ENROLL FOR A COURSE?

Use DUCK WEB to enroll for academic credit.

Non-credit enrollment is available to students, faculty, staff and community members. UO tuition is not assessed and non-credit classes do not appear on transcripts. Non-credit students may register at the PE Office, 102 Esslinger Hall, starting on the first day of classes. Students may pay the activity fee by cash, check, or be billed. The fee waiver for senior citizen auditors does not apply to PE & REC classes.

Regardless of registration status (credit or noncredit), if a class is closed attend the first class meeting and talk with the instructor about the possibility of enrolling.

WHY DO YOU CHARGE COURSE FEES? HOW MUCH DO COURSES COST?

PE courses are not fully funded by the University. The activity fee assessed for each course covers the cost of instruction, equipment, administrative support, and a portion of facilities maintenance.Fees vary depending upon the nature of the course. In some cases additional fees are required to pay for the rental of equipment (e.g. scuba gear), transportation (e.g. outdoor pursuits outings), and certification (e.g. first aid/cpr). Please refer to the CLASS SCHEDULE for the fee for a specific course.

WHAT ARE THE ATTENDANCE POLICIES?

Most PE courses are offered P/NP only (some are offered graded). It is policy that students must attend at least 80% of the total physical education class sessions each term to pass the course and receive credit.

Attendance at the first class session is mandatory. Absentees may be replaced and required to drop the course. Absentees who are replaced are required to follow the registration drop procedure. Students are required to obtain instructor's consent to add a class after the first week.

Most classes meet for 50 minutes. Outdoor Pursuits classes meet weekly for 1 or 2 hours and may include single or multi-day outings. Eleven-session classes meet for 85 minutes.

All students are required to have a current University of Oregon student identification card for entry into the Student Recreation Center. Faculty, staff, and community members may use the pools, gymnasia, weight room, etc., by purchasing a recreation pass at the main desk of the Student Recreation Center.

1. MW & UH Courses: 1 credit ( 50 minute sessions)

  • Each student is allowed four absences regardless of the reason for the absence.
  • On the fifth absence the student will fail the course (this absence constitutes more than 20% of the class sessions).

2. Courses with Eleven 85-Minute Sessions:

  • Each student is allowed a maximum of 2 absences, regardless of the reason for the absence.
  • On the third absence the student will fail the course (this absence constitutes more than 20% of the class sessions).

3. Outdoor Pursuits courses and courses that include a "certification" as part of the curriculum have their own policy on the effect of absences on a course grade.

4. For courses which meet irregularly, the instructor determines the 80% attendance requirement.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I'M INJURED AND CANNOT CONTINUE PARTICIPATING?

  • During Weeks 2-7, you MUST withdraw if illness or injury causes or will cause you to exceed the number of allowed absences. There is no make-up policy.
  • During Weeks 8-10, you may arrange, if appropriate, an Incomplete Contract with your instructor or you may petition to withdraw through the Registrar's Office.

SAFETY INFORMATION

Students participate at their own risk. Students are strongly encouraged to obtain health and accident insurance prior to participation in a PE course. Students are requested to provide their instructor with information regarding any medical condition that may effect participation in a PE course.

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

Students with disabilities are welcomed by PE & REC. Students with special needs who plan to enroll in a PE class should notify the Counselor for Students with Disabilities office, 164 Oregon Hall prior to the time of registration and, if necessary, request special assistance.
